DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF INNOVATIVE CONNECTING ROD FOR SINGLE CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE

Abstract:
In the internal combustion engine, the piston assembly contributes to most of the frictional losses. Wear resistance of the piston is improved by various techniques like chromium, molybdenum and plasma coatings. However this method does not give a permanent solution. After the coating wears out, piston behaves as a base material. A concept design for a new connecting rod that can reduce the piston side thrust and thereby the frictional losses has been proposed. The objective of this research is to translate that concept design into a concrete and detailed design. The fabrication work would then be carried out for the new connecting rod design and its sub-assembly and the last phase of the project involves the integration of the new connecting rod and drive shaft assembly into an existing engine whose existing connecting rod and crank assembly have been replaced.
